Ancient Romans and Greeks used gargoyles as their rain gutters.

Gargoyles were used to be a functional and decorative solution to a

problem. They would be fixed to the end of a drainage pipe and then

divert the water away from the buildings. This was before proper guttering

and downpipes were invented.
